A 70-200mm f/2.8 is the lens that decides your bag. Around 200 mm long before you add the body, it is the item that pushes most slings and compact inserts past their published interior. The table above is computed for a Sony A7 IV with the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II against every bag we track, using the same engine as our fit checker — ranked from most headroom to least.
The binding dimension is length, not litres
A 70-200 doesn’t care how many litres a bag claims. It needs one interior dimension — width, height, or depth — long enough to clear the barrel with the body attached, plus a hair of padding. That is why some 20-litre backpacks fit it easily while a “camera” sling twice the price does not: the sling’s longest interior run is under 22 cm.
- The smallest thing that clears it is a sling, not a backpack. The WANDRD ROGUE 6L Sling — a 6-litre bag — fits the A7 IV + 70-200 with room to spare, because its 305 mm interior width takes the lens lying flat. If you only carry the one telephoto, you do not need a 30-litre pack.
- Among inserts, the WANDRD Essential Camera Cube and Tenba BYOB 10 DSLR insert are the smallest that still rate “fits with room” — drop either into a daypack you already own.
- The cutoff is sharp. Just below those, the Tenba BYOB 10 Camera Insert goes “tight — measure carefully,” and the compact Mirrorless Mover 20 exceeds the published interior outright. A centimetre of interior length is the whole story.
How to read the table
Start at the top for the roomiest fits, or scroll to the last “fits with room” row for the smallest bag you can get away with. Every interior dimension in the table is cited on that bag’s page with a manufacturer or retailer-mirror source and the date we checked it. Want to see the lens drawn against a body to scale, or swap in a Canon or Nikon 70-200? Open the camera comparator, which shows the smallest bag that fits for any body-plus-standard-zoom pairing.
If the 70-200 is only half your kit
Carrying a second body and a 24-70 alongside it changes the math — that is a full two-body load, and far fewer bags clear it. See the two-body travel backpack guide, or run your exact gear through the checker.
Fit verdicts are computed from manufacturer-published interior dimensions and are a planning estimate, not a guarantee — padding and dividers vary between samples, and a return policy is your safety net.

These guide tables use the same source-cited interior dimensions as the interactive checker. Add your body and lenses to see which bags fit with room, run tight, or exceed the published interior.
